Snapchat first launched back in 2011, before quickly gaining popularity amongst social media users. Urban music artists – most notably Krept & Konan, Lethal Bizzle and Stormzy – have all used this social media platform significantly to help push their music.
Previously, we’ve mentioned that Instagram Stories can be a more effective version of Snapchat. But, whilst that may be true in a lot of cases, it really depends on which platform your target audience uses the most. If you already have a large Snapchat following then you should definitely be using this platform.
With this in mind, we’ve put together some of our top Snapchat marketing tips for unsigned artists.
Show your journey
Believe it or not, your supporters want to feel like they’re a part of your journey. What better way to do this than by showing people your journey through Snapchat? As we mentioned above, artists like Stormzy have done this – and still do – to great success.
Behind the scenes videos and images with unique insights into your life tends to work really well. For example posting teasers of studio sessions, music video shoots, holidays, exclusive track previews and general insights to your day-to-day life.
Until recently, one of the biggest problems with Snapchat has been that you can’t add links. But earlier this year, Snapchat actually introduced this feature. It’s really easy to use – when you’re posting a story simply click the icon that looks like a paper clip. Don’t forget to take advantage of this feature. Including links in any of your social media posts – not just on Snapchat – can be a great way to drive people to your other social profiles, music videos, projects and so on.
Link up with other artists
Just imagine the excitement you’d feel if you saw your two favourite artists on each others’ Snapchat stories! This can be a good way to get people talking about you on social media, which is sure to have a positive effect on your brand awareness. You could even do a Snapchat takeover on each others’ account.
Promote your Snapchat on your other social media accounts…and vice versa
One of the cons of Snapchat is that it doesn’t have a search function. This can cause some difficulty when trying to promote your account on the platform. Therefore it’s better to promote your Snapchat account through your other social media accounts. You can take a screenshot of your Snapchat username and code, encouraging people to add you.
It can also be useful to promote your other social media accounts on Snapchat. This is just in case some of your Snapchat followers don’t follow you on all social platforms.
